Ethan Mollick, Associate Professor at The Wharton School, in Harvard Business Review:

“This is why the world has suddenly changed. The traditional boundaries of jobs have suddenly shifted. Machines can now do tasks that could only be done by highly trained humans. Some valuable skills are no longer useful, and new skills will take their place. And no one really knows what any of this means yet.”

What is Generative AI, and Why Should You Care?

What is Generative AI?

Imagine a computer program that's like a virtual artist or writer. Instead of just sorting through information or answering questions, it can actually create new things—like a picture, a piece of music, or even a written article. This type of technology is called "Generative AI," and it's like giving a computer its own imagination. It takes in a lot of examples of something, like lots of pictures or lots of articles, learns from them, and then makes its own versions.

Why Should You Care?

Why is this technology important, especially if tech isn't really your thing? Generative AI is already changing the way we work, and it can simplify many common office tasks. For example, if you spend a lot of time drafting emails, imagine a tool that helps you compose them faster and more effectively. If your job involves scheduling meetings with clients or teammates, AI could automate the process, finding the best times that work for everyone. If you're in sales or marketing, it can even help create more engaging presentations or promotional materials by generating relevant content or data visualizations. And if you're swamped with data analysis or report generation, this technology can swiftly tackle those responsibilities, freeing you up for more meaningful work.

The key takeaway here is productivity. By adopting Generative AI tools, you can complete your tasks in a fraction of the time, freeing you up for more important, strategic work. It doesn't just stop at saving time; the quality of your work can improve as well.

Ignoring this tech evolution risks a decline in efficiency, service quality, and competitiveness. In a world that's becoming more digital by the day, understanding and leveraging this technology is no longer optional—it's essential for staying relevant and advancing in your career. So whether you're aiming to move up the career ladder or just want to make your daily workload more manageable, being savvy about Generative AI can offer you a crucial advantage.

FAQs

Fact:

AI, specifically Generative AI, has developed to a level where now human intelligence can be cloned on a computer. Essentially, the human brain and how it thinks is being cloned in Generative AI tools like ChatGPT. The key idea here is "Generative" -- computers can now "think" and generate new texts, images, etc. given a concept by a human. This is the breakthrough in AI that has happed 8 months ago. Remember Terminator 2? We are headed there... well not that bad (hopefully).

Qn: Will AI then take over jobs that require thinking?

Ans: It's not so straightforward. I like this quote from Emad Mostaque, founder of Stability AI: "AI is not going to replace humans. Humans using AI will replace humans who don't use AI." Practically all office or white-collar jobs will be affected -- from doctors to marketing specialists and everyone in between. This is because the Generative AI technology is so versatile, and can be used in many realms to solve or automate many problems.

Qn: So if productivity increases, what happens to jobs?

Ans: If one person can do the job of 2-5 people, do we need 5 people for that job? Unfortunately businesses care about costs. You've seen how in the past year about 300k folks in tech companies have been laid off -- not because they were bad performers or because the company was bleeding money. So there will inevitably be some layoffs coming in the future for office/white-collar workers. That is one reason why folks like Elon Musk have said that AI is one of the most dangerous technologies at the moment.

Qn: So what should I do?

Ans: Prepare for the inevitable. Learn to use the AI tools now, master the technology, and improve your productivity 2-5x. Be ready now, rather than later. SLT is providing Prompt Engineering training, specifically in ChatGPT.

Qn: So why specifically ChatGPT training?

Ans: ChatGPT is the leader in this technology right now. It can do a ton of stuff. I believe the skills you will learn in mastering how to use ChatGPT can be transferred over to some other new GPT when it comes out, because in essence you are talking to a computer "brain" and asking it things to do. The way in which you ask is called Prompt Engineering.

Qn: The training you are providing is 6 hours long!

Ans: There's a lot of material to go in depth. Also, we'll be offering this training on a weekly basis, in two parts: morning session (PART 1), and afternoon session (PART 2). If you take PART1 on one day, you can always take PART 2 on a different day, as per your schedule, just make sure that you take them in order

Qn: Do I have to come to this training, or can I learn it by myself?

Ans: While a lot of the material for this course is online, what we have done is gone through 100s of hours of material through many different courses, and combined the best methods and up-to-date practices for you. The course is also taught by a live instructor, whereby you'll get to practice the concepts and can have your questions answered.
